MANILA, Philippines – Filipino teenage Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So got off to a great start in the 43rd Biel International Chess Festival Young Grandmasters tournament on Monday.
The 16-year-old So scored a 32 moves victory over GM David Howell of England. He prevailed with the black pieces in their Caro-Kann Defense skirmirsh.
So, the country’s highest-rated player with an ELO of 2674, is seeded 4th in the category-17, all-GM tournament held in Biel, Switzerland.
“Hopefully, I can perform  just as well in this 10-player tournament and possibly break  the 2700 ELO barrier,” said So, who is known in the chess world for his upset wins over GM Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and GM Gata Kamsky of the United   States in the 2009 World Chess Cup in Russia.  
So, the pride of Bacoor, Cavite, will face GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in Round 2 on Tuesday.
Vachier-Lagrave halved the point with GM Fabiano Caruana of Italy in 44 pushes.
Prior to the tournament, So swept all his 21 opponents in a rare simultaneous exhibition in downtown Biel upon the invitation of the Swiss organizers.

So currently holds the distinction of being the world’s youngest GM in Top 60 of the  FIDE (World Chess Federation) list. – by Marlon Bernardino
